Forest Row Parish Council are looking to bring a Shed Project to the village.
What are Shed Projects?
Shed Projects are community spaces for people to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of all ages to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun.
The Shed concept started in the 1980s and 90s in Australia to offer people the opportunity to ‘potter’ much as they would in their own garden shed. The difference being that they would not be alone.
The ability for people to share their skills, learn from others, undertake small and not so small projects in the company of others is central to the philosophy of the Shed movement.
The idea has spread and, according to the UK Shed Association, there are now over 400 shed projects up and running in the UK.
About the Forest Row Shed Project
Forest Row is superficially prosperous, but this hides a surprising degree of deprivation and need, and also a deteriorating social context. This risks spilling over into mental health issues.
The Forest Row Shed Project aims to establish a thriving hub for people of all ages to get together in a creative, safe environment to build and repair things, assist other residents, and form new connections and friendships.
The Shed will work in tandem with other well-established initiatives in the village including the Repair Café, the VENUe on the Green, FRow Resource and the Second Life community shop.
The current plan is already an ambitious one: a genuine community build. We hope that Forest Row residents will join us to help construct our dedicated building on a small corner of land adjacent to the skate park employing as many re-used and low- carbon materials as possible.
